Perfect Pitcher Margaritas

Is there anything more tragic than a poorly made margarita? Growing up in the 90’s, it was the time of processed and packaged everything, case and point, the sour mouth puckering margarita mix that claimed all you had to do was just add tequila for the perfect margarita. But it was wrong, so wrong. The perfect margarita only needs three ingredients, and when you get the ratio and the quality of the ingredients right, you can make the perfect pitcher margaritas, dare I say, ever.

To let guests create their own margarita creation, we had to start with the perfect base. I have been to too many events and too many restaurants to instantly regret ordering anything other than an “organic” margarita as they call it, which is just tequila, triple sec, and lime juice.

Why this option is always $2 more expensive behooves me, but it’s the only way I can enjoy a margarita when we go out.

Enter the easiest way to recreate overpriced “organic” margaritas at home: use high-quality ingredients and know the right ratio.

A traditional margarita is made of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice and the ratio that corresponds is 2:1:1.

Two parts tequila (in this case we used my personal favorite tequila, Don Julio Blanco), one part triple-sec (ditch that plastic bottle of triple sec and invest in a liqueur that will go beyond a margarita, Cointreau), and fresh lime juice. To skirt having to squeeze over 30 limes for this pitcher, I opted for a bottle of organic and pure lime juice that I found at Whole Foods.

When the bottle reads: Ingredients – organic lime juice, you’ve found the right bottle.

This recipe is as simple as using a kitchen scale, combining all your ingredients into a pitcher, stirring, and serving. Why complicate anything about a margarita?

Although, if you do want to complicate it, check out how we added some flavored simple syrups over here
