When it comes to decorating, I’m personally drawn to a space that looks comfortable and inviting but chic and modern. When I visited the HGTV Smart Home last April in Palmetto Bluff, I was blown away by how well they combined masculine industrial touches with soft and southern design elements that make this modern Southern kitchen a top on my #decorenvy list! Read on to see how you can recreate this Modern Southern Kitchen in your own home!
While most of us may not have the budget to completely gut and renovate a kitchen, we can do a few things to bring in the elements of a modern Southern kitchen.
Upgrade #1: New Drawer Fixtures
Before you go spend a fortune on new cabinets and hire professional painters, ask yourself if you are able to upgrade the drawer pulls to elevate your space. One of the unique touches in this kitchen is the use of black industrial drawer pulls that juxtapose nicely against the blue cabinets. When updating your drawer pulls, pick a color that will contrast and stand out against your cabinet color.

Upgrade #2: New Light Fixtures
We all remember the brass chandelier of the 90’s that hung from the chain in our kitchen at some point in our life. Some of us may still have the outdated brass fixtures hanging, but if you already have a chandelier spot in your kitchen, another easy upgrade is a new chandelier or light fixtures. Try looking for something with sleek lines and the same color as your cabinet fixtures. If the bulbs seem outdated, add some Edison light bulbs to channel your favorite restaurant!

Upgrade #3: Invest in a Statement Rug
I love a kilim rug in a kitchen. I think the combination of bright beautiful patterns really makes the most sophisticated statement against a kitchen. A big kilim rug will help bring in color and visual interest if you can’t paint your cabinets or retile your floor. Kilim rugs are great because they are low-pile and don’t shed. Most can be washed with a hose and hung to dry outside so they don’t need professional cleaning. My favorite place to buy Kilim rugs is on Etsy because you can generally find a better deal there than anywhere else. This shop has great prices on authentic kilim rugs.

Tips for a successful kitchen upgrade
- Understand that it is a process and will take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and unless you have $50,000 laying around, ripping out your cabinets and putting in new Carrera marble countertops may not be feasible. Don’t let big changes get in the way of progress towards your dream kitchen.
- Start small and build from there. We listed the drawer pulls first because it’s the smallest touch to add to your kitchen to elevate the look. If your drawers don’t have pulls, it’s the easiest way to add a flashy element to your kitchen.
- Function over fashion always. If you have a messy household, a white kitchen may not be the best choice for you. Design for your needs, not just what’s trendy.
Love your kitchen and blue cabinets. Can you share what color blue that is?
Hi! This isn’t my home this is the 2018 HGTV Smart Home. There should be some details here or in related searches on their site. https://www.hgtv.com/sweepstakes/hgtv-smart-home/2018/tour-hgtv-smart-home-2018-pictures I believe it’s a Sherwin Williams color.
What color paint is on those cabinets?
I’m not certain as it was the 2018 HGTV Smart Home. You may be able to find additional information here > https://www.hgtv.com/sweepstakes/hgtv-smart-home/2018/tour-hgtv-smart-home-2018-pictures
Why do we always have to do the research of the paint colors. The most frequently asked questions are usually about paint colors and yet we we are always searching for the answers. Hardware ,lighting fixtures, ,rugs etc but no paint info. Would have been nice to have that info included in this posting.
Thanks for the input. This was a promotional post to help spur interest and drive traffic to the Southern Show Home. I will look into these details and update it for future reference needs!
What is the backsplash? Is it brick or tile? Would you care to share?
It’s marble tile sourced from floor and decor.
Where is the light from the hangs above the island? It’s perfect!
I’m not certain and I’m sure it was a designer/ trade account contact. I have some similar light fixtures linked in this post for you to shop as well. Try this! https://rstyle.me/+dKbgtXK_4NN3mujt59zHJg
