Living in our condo has been a blast, but with a new baby, nannies, and in-laws visiting all the time, we’re running out of room fast. We love our place, but it looks like we’ll be moving by the end of the summer. A friend of mine made a funny point: “your house will never look better than the day you sell it.” That got me thinking. One day, I got the urge to do a big spring clean and decided to finally hang up some art that’s been sitting around for four years. That’s when I realized I didn’t like how the entryway looked. It felt all over the place.
SO, to satisfy my DIY need, I’ve joined the Spring One Room Challenge to zhush up the foyer with some fresh paint and a more polished style.
When we first renovated our house in 2019, I didn’t know much about decorating, what my design style was nor how to combine my husbands taste with mine. The entryway shows that. It’s got a mix of stuff: a traditional rug I found at Scott’s Antique market, a chandelier we bought quickly because my husband wanted a light there, art from Etsy that doesn’t match, and a console table I love that I found at an estate sale 2 years ago. It’s pretty, and it’s where we drop our keys and things when we get home.
But the mix of rustic art, farmhouse chandelier, traditional rug, and console table doesn’t really go together. So, I’m planning to change it all.
My husband wasn’t thrilled when I got paint samples for the foyer from the Easter bunny, ha!
Heres a look at the foyer now:
Right now, the foyer is dark, even though we have big windows and a French door. The traditional rug makes it feel heavy, and the black chandelier doesn’t match anything.
Complications
The biggest challenge is that the foyer is always busy, so I’ll have to paint at night when the baby is sleeping. Luckily, it’s a small space, so I can paint it in less than an hour and it’ll be dry by morning. I’d love to paint the ceiling, trim, and doors too, but since we’re moving soon, I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I’ve convinced my husband to let me try my design out as practice for our next place.
Concepts & Inspiraiton
Since I’m not allowed to do any more wallpaper in the house (RUDE), I am either going to paint stripes or take a page out of one of the below photos and just make the art the wallpaper aspect.
I’m thinking about painting the foyer a soft aqua blue or doing yellow and green stripes a la Closet Stripe from Farrow & Ball.
The Mockups
Using my guide to creating interior inspiration from Midjourney, I mocked up some of these ideas incorporating the elements of my home.
And then I turned those into canva renderings to see how it would look all put together. Now I’m torn, maybe I do want stripes in the foyer?
Over the next week I’ll be testing some paint swatches and collecting some textiles for curtains.
The Punch List
Render some interiors with AI to see what direction I want to go in (stripes or aqua)
Render some art with AI (tutorial coming soon!)
Test swatch the Paint
Source a new oushak rug
Find my dream Aerin Hampton chandelier on Facebook Marketplace for close to half off (which will absolutely be coming with us, sorry future home buyers but that one isn’t staying)
Source sheer fabric and sew new curtains for our French door
Source decor for the console table that is functional for dog walking accessories as well as stylish
This project is my way of saying goodbye to This Ruff House. As we get ready for our next big move, I want to make the entryway welcoming for the next people who live here and enjoy every moment we have left loving this house and all the times we get to come home to her.
Paint the trim, doors, etc. Your home can never look too fresh when selling.
If my vote counts for anything, I prefer the mint green paint from your midjourney inspirations! I think that looks very classy and modern! Looking forward to what direction to decide to go!!!
I love your input! And yes, that just may be the way we go 😉
